Still My Own · Track 14 / 16

Before Your Permission

We were here. We are here.

Before Your Permission artwork · Chris in FullFrom Still My Own

Plato on a phone, a date across the table. History, sharp humor and a man’s desire for another man confront the power that teaches shame, then calls its control love. The answer is a life being lived: a hand held in public, a dance, and two people whose closeness leaves them free.

Connected song on Aún Soy Mío
Antes De Tu Permiso

A life before the verdict.

A date, a phone, an old text, and a man worth looking up for. The past is full of desire and affection, even where its traces are disputed or incomplete. The song keeps returning to what is close enough to touch: a hand, a sleeping body, a laugh. A life does not have to wait for someone else’s permission to be real.

Your freedom looks good next to me.From the lyrics of Before Your Permission

Dignity precedes the evidence offered in its defense.

History can interrupt the claim that a way of loving is new, unnatural or imported. But nobody’s right to live should depend on finding a prestigious ancestor or winning an argument about an old text. The song holds those two truths together. Its moments of intimacy keep bringing the stakes back from a verdict to a person: a life already happening, with someone worth holding.

On Still My Own

From a long history of wanting to one particular night: My Hips Heard It First follows with a body already moving and someone worth moving closer to.

Passage 1
I wanted your kiss. I kept checking the door. No one was watching. I still felt on trial. You taught me to police myself. I quit. I’ve got a life to live.
Passage 2
You turn me once. I turn you back. We laugh and find the beat. You don’t have to lose yourself To get this close to me.
Passage 3
Antes del juicio, yo ya estaba aquí. Tu miedo no borra mi derecho a vivir. Mi libertad no te quita la tuya. Quiero vivir. Quiero que vivas. Te quiero libre, y me quiero así.

Concept, lyric writing, development and revision, musical and performance direction: Christian Rodriguez / Chris in Full.

Chris required historical claims to be examined and qualified, while directing the song toward desire, humor and danceable defiance. His written musical direction called for a recurring Greek lyre motif, with Egyptian harp and sistrum, Chinese guqin and Cuban tres answering the vocal within an electronic dance groove. These instrumental voices were directed to remain connected to the song’s melodic rap, sung hooks and continuing pulse. Historical inquiry and present-day intimacy remain connected without making dignity depend on historical proof.

Across Still My Own, Chris’s original writing, extensive rewriting and narrative development give form to his lived experience, imagination and emotional vision. He works between intuition and reasoning, refining language and musical direction so that phrasing, rhythm and delivery carry what he means. These notes describe creative development, not final recording credits.
